[Fanfiction] Naruto/FFVII: Correspondence arc (ficlet collection)
Title: Correspondence Arc - INCOMPLETE FICLETS
Writer: Inami
Rating: G
Fandom/Series: Final Fantasy VII/Naruto
Character/s: Zack Fair, Cloud Strife, Hatake Kakashi, Uzumaki Naruto
Warnings: None?
Spoilers: ???
Writer's Note: A compilation of FFVII/Naruto ficlets based off works by those in
shinobi_soldier,
silara and
icedark_elf. A spinoff of my first fic in this fandom, Correspondence, which is faulty and filled with plotholes and timeline errors, the Correspondence Arc is my attempt at fixing it. XD;;; Since it is still far from being fixed, I'll just post these ficlets that may be the framework of CArc.
Between Komikon work, True My Heart Arc (yay, ZxC~!) and Correspondence... D: Schoolwork! Must... prioritize!
[Cloud, Zack and Kakashi, the first meeting after they left for Midgar; when Cloud receives a letter from the Sandaime about the existence of Uzumaki Naruto.]
"Worrywart." Zack's expression was that of fond indulgence and amusement. "You're acting like a mother hen."
"But, it's my baby cousin, who doesn't even have his family to take care of him!"
What a cramped place, Kakashi thought, a lazy eye assessing the room, staying all but unseen in his little spot of shadow-of-a-bunk.
"You just put your whole wages into that envelope." The Uchiha outcast was saying, lounging in the lower bunk. He boy kept stealing glances at him, eyes blank before returning to the whirlwind of activity that was the Yondaime's nephew. "Take out half, and put in this."
"Zack! I can't take this, this is your money!"
Huh. Maybe it was hereditary.
"He's your family, Cloud, which is why I'm doing this." Zack stole the bulging envelope with a hum, rearranging the contents to find more space to put more things in. "After all, you're my family, so by extension, Naruto is too."
There was silence, and Kakashi could feel something running under the current, watching the two watch each other. This, the deep bond between them, surpassing even that of the blood that ran through their veins. Zack was anything but the complete opposite of the Uchihas and was glad to be so. Namikaze Cloud - Cloud Strife, taking after the name of a father nobody knew existed - was also unattached to either his true father or even his surrogate father's name.
And yet, here they were, discussing the life of little Naruto in the same manner he had an inkling was reminiscent of when the two just left.
"Kakashi," Zack looked over, nonchalant, unheard by the others in the room. "If you have a bigger envelope, pull it out. I think Cloud's gonna send a materia."
[Naruto recieving his first letter; because there should be a way to interest the boy into studying how to read...]
"See, look here, at the very top. That's your name right there, Naruto."
Naruto climbed up the white Hokage robes and peered at the neatly-written text on the scroll. His face scrunched up at the sight of strung-together letters and kanji. "Why would he want to write me a letter when he doesn't know me?"
A fond smile grew on the old man's wrinkled face and shifted the boy to a more comfortable position. "That's because he's your family, Naruto." He continued, pretending not to hear the boy gasp. "And because he cares for you and wants to be with you, even if he can't be with you right now."
"That's not true!" The boy looked at the paper longingly. "How can you know when he hasn't met me yet!"
"Ohohoho!" Sarutobi laughed, poking the boy's forehead and eliciting a howl of outrage. "I'm not lying. It's written right here," he pointed at a line at which Naruto squinted at and frowned.
The boy sagged in dismay. "I can't read it."
He ruffled the hair into new feats of unruliness. "I'll read it to you, if you promise to learn how to read. He promised to send you more letters."
"Really? He'll send more?" Clear blue eyes stared up at him in delight. "I'll learn how to read! I promise I'll work hard on it!"
Sarutobi grinned as toothily as he could muster with what he had. "Shut up and try to catch up, brat."
[Naruto, on the way to the Country of Wave; 'My name is Uzumaki Naruto! You'll see, I'll become the next Hokage!']
Naruto-kun, did you know that Sarutobi-sama sent me your genin application picture? Both pictures, but Zack took the other wacky shot. Hey, kid, hope you don't mind, I really like the originality. :D Keep it up!
Sorry, that was Zack. Well, I keep your other picture with me in his wallet, you should see it, it's cute! and did you know, you look a lot like your father. I can see the resemblance, only he had his hair a little longer.
You'll grow up a fine man, Naruto-kun, just like your father.
"Naruto!" He kept his head bowed, hiding his big grin and watery eyes, wiping at his runny nose. He pocketed the most recent letter, half-read and the photograph included, depicting two men in the forefront, one with unruly blond hair and the other a dark-haired man who oddly looked familiar, the latter discreetly pointing at a distance behind them, where three oblivious men stood.
"I'm coming!"
